Drywood Termite Treatment in Palmetto — Historic-Framing Specialists

Palmetto FL Pest Control specializes in drywood termite treatment for the local housing stock. Our technicians know which neighborhoods have the oldest wood, where salt air accelerates damage, and which construction eras used untreated lumber that drywood termites exploit.

Drywood termite treatment depends on the extent and location of the colony. A localized infestation in one piece of trim requires a different approach than galleries running through multiple structural members. Palmetto FL Pest Control inspects first, scopes the damage, and recommends the least-invasive treatment that fully resolves the problem.

Palmetto’s historic downtown and Snead Island older stock have real drywood termite exposure. Pre-1970 wood framing uses old-growth heartwood that drywood colonies love, and by the time frass piles up on a windowsill, the colony has usually been active for months.

Palmetto FL Pest Control handles the full path — species ID, tenting-vs-spot recommendation, licensed fumigation, and the WDO clearance letter when the treatment is tied to a real estate closing. Call (941) 294-3355 for a free inspection.

Is It Actually Drywood?

Drywood gets confused with a few things:

  • Subterranean termites — build mud tubes, live in soil, need ground contact. Different treatment entirely (Termidor or Sentricon).
  • Carpenter ants — tunnel into wood but push out sawdust-like frass mixed with insect parts, and they’re visible ants. Drywood termites you mostly don’t see unless you break open the wood.
  • Powder post beetles — leave round exit holes and very fine flour-like frass. WDO covers these too but the treatment differs.
  • Drywood termite frass — small hexagonal pellets the size of coarse sand, accumulating in the same spot repeatedly.

Bring us a frass sample or a clear photo. We ID before we quote — treating drywood like subterranean (or vice versa) is wasted money.

Tenting vs. Spot — The Honest Call

Tent fumigation is the right call when:

  • Frass is present in multiple rooms
  • Structural wood members (beams, rafters, joists) show activity
  • The home has a long history of drywood issues
  • The WDO inspection flagged activity in multiple locations

Spot injection is the right call when:

  • Activity is clearly contained to one frame, one joist, or one piece of furniture
  • There’s no evidence of activity elsewhere in the structure
  • The infested wood can be fully accessed for injection

On most Palmetto drywood calls, tent fumigation is the correct path because the visible activity usually represents a longer, wider presence than the homeowner realizes. We still check — and if spot is genuinely appropriate, that’s what we quote.

The Fumigation Process

Day 1: Prep and seal. We arrive to finalize prep with you. Food, meds, pets, plants already out. Gas utilities handled. Tent goes up around the structure.

Day 2: Fumigation. Vikane gas released inside the sealed structure. Concentration monitored throughout to ensure penetration into every wood member.

Day 3: Aeration and reentry. Tent comes off. Structure aerates for the required period. We test with direct-reading instruments and clear you for reentry that evening.

You receive a detailed prep checklist 48+ hours before the tent goes up. No surprises on the day of.

WDO Clearance for Real Estate Closings

If treatment is tied to a Palmetto real estate closing, we issue an FDACS-signed clearance letter documenting the treatment — species, chemicals, date, technician. We can send the letter directly to the title company, buyer’s agent, and lender if you prefer we handle the paperwork flow.

Pricing

Tent fumigation prices by cubic footage of the tented volume, not square footage of living area — attic and garage space count toward the total. Typical Palmetto single-family runs in the four figures; larger and older homes higher. On-site measure before quoting. Spot injection for localized activity is significantly lower.

We recently engaged this team for our pest control needs. Adam provided an extensive overview of his services and quoted a vastly more competitive rate. After two service calls we're not only impressed by Adam's expertise but the level of service is absolutely astonishing (we're from New York and that's not easily done). They deserve 10 stars and should be everyone's choice for pest care.

My fiancé and I live in Parrish — she, I, and our two dogs were attacked by Africanized killer bees. We almost lost one of our dogs and needed to remediate the situation immediately. I contacted Adam and he was quick to respond. The team came out within 24 hours, assessed the situation and executed a successful plan to eliminate the entire hive. Thank you Adam and the entire team!

Adam was amazing. He came out the same day for a very last minute call. Not only did he spend time understanding our problem and explaining everything in detail, he also came back twice to make sure we caught the mice. We appreciated his attention so much we had him come back out to spray for ants too. Excellent service — we'll definitely continue to use this company for all of our pest needs.

Currently renting and have been using Adam throughout our lease. Adam is very responsive and thorough. He has come out to inspect the status of things before deciding what's best for our house. Appreciate his quick response and coming out when I reach out. We'd use Adam for future pest control needs when we move out of our lease! Highly recommend.

Absolutely shocked at the service these folks provide! Called on a Sunday morning and an actual person answered and scheduled our appointment for the next day. Came on time, took care of the issue, recommended simple care we can do on our own, and never tried to sell me a monthly service. Even went to a neighbor's house to analyze their situation without an appointment. The kind of service we've all forgotten about. Highly Recommend!!!

I can't say enough good things about this team! The technician showed up right on time, was incredibly professional, and took the time to explain everything. He didn't just treat the obvious spots — he inspected every corner of my home and pointed out small issues I never would have noticed. Adam gave honest, clear answers, no upselling. After the treatment I noticed results almost immediately.

Questions We Hear Every Day

Quick answers from our SWFL pest pros.

Why are drywood termites common in older Palmetto homes?

Historic downtown Palmetto and Snead Island have a meaningful share of pre-1970 wood-framed homes. Construction from that era used old-growth heartwood — dense, rich in the nutrients drywood colonies thrive on. Modern pine framing is younger, faster-grown, and less attractive. If your home was built before 1970 and has original wood framing, drywood pressure is real.

How do I tell drywood frass from dust or sawdust?

Drywood frass is very specific: small hexagonal pellets, roughly the size of coarse sand or ground pepper, usually the color of the wood the colony is eating. It piles up in small mounds directly below infested wood. Regular dust is dust-sized and scatters; sawdust from construction has longer fibers. If you're sweeping up what looks like tiny pepper grains in the same spot repeatedly, that's drywood frass. Photograph it and send us the picture — we can usually confirm from a good photo.

What's the difference between tent fumigation and spot treatment?

Tent fumigation uses Vikane gas to penetrate every wood member in the entire structure. It's used when drywood activity is widespread or when we can't access all the suspected areas. Spot treatment injects borate or neonicotinoid product directly into localized infested wood — used when activity is confirmed contained to one or two small areas. The difference is scope. We don't recommend tenting when spot works; we don't recommend spot when activity is clearly broader.

How long does tent fumigation take?

3 days. Day 1: final prep + tent goes up. Day 2: fumigant inside the sealed structure. Day 3: tent comes off, structure aerates, we verify safe reentry levels with direct-reading instruments, and hand you the all-clear. You're back in your home the evening of day 3.

What does tent fumigation cost in Palmetto?

Pricing is based on the cubic footage of the entire tented volume — living area plus attic plus garage space. A typical Palmetto single-family runs in the four figures. We measure on-site before quoting; no phone quotes on fumigation because we need exact numbers. Spot injection for localized activity prices lower.

Can my pets stay during tent fumigation?

No. All people, pets, and live plants must vacate for the full 3 days. Food, medications, and tobacco products either leave with you or get double-sealed inside Nylofume bags we provide. We coordinate gas/electric/water shut-off during the fumigation. The full prep checklist is provided 48+ hours before tent day.

Will tent fumigation prevent future drywood termites?

No — tent fumigation is a one-time reset, not a preventive. After reentry, airborne insects can colonize the home exactly the same way they did the first time. What it does is eliminate every drywood colony that existed in the building at the moment of fumigation. Post-fumigation borate wood treatment on accessible framing (attic rafters, exposed beams) is available for long-term drywood resistance — we quote that as an add-on when it makes sense.

Do you issue WDO clearance letters after treatment?

Yes. After tent fumigation or spot treatment, we issue a clearance letter signed by an FDACS-certified operator documenting the treatment, target species, chemicals, and date — everything a lender, title company, or buyer's agent needs to close with a positive WDO report.
